overview

MOD Inc. is an ecommerce and fan art licensing software that aims to empower creators and businesses through its innovative merchandising system. Their peer-to-peer model allows for fans or creatives to design merch for the online content creator of their choosing. Through a licensing process, merch designers get paid, while content creators hosting on the platform get to connect with their fanbase as well as design and sell their products all in one place.

GOAL

Through a thorough re-design, translate business and user needs into an intuitive platform that would appeal to clients.

THE PROBLEM SPACE
🪢 Intricate user flow

This platform is meant to be versatile and useful for many types of users and businesses. As a result, there are a lot of interconnected flows that need to be seamless implemented.

🎨 Improving visual design

The previous interface and design system was outdated and required an upgrade.

solution

I designed and delivered a prototype that features an optimized information architecture, a scalable design system, and user workflows tailored to align with both user needs and business objectives.

pain point

Research participants expressed difficulty forming meaningful relationships during networking.

solution

Users can customize their profile to cater to their career goals and interests.

purpose

Increase accuracy when recommending mentors and peers to connect with.

Design process

Creating an Intuitive Information Architecture

Upon receiving the project objectives from the start-up, I conducted an in-depth analysis of the existing system and developed a high-level IA map to support user flows effectively.

Agile Iteration

The prototyping process was highly collaborative and fast as I was working with a very small team. I would frequently meet with the CEO/Product Owner to present my designs and gather feedback for improvements.

🤝 Seamless Licensing Flow

I tweaked the licensing process several times as it was one of the more complicated user flows. We wanted designers and licensors to easily communicate with each other and suggest edits for products all in one place.

📦 Understanding eCommerce

There were times where adjustments were made in order to adhere to industry standards. For example, I had to tweak copy so that it would accurately reflect eCommerce or licensing terms.

Building Cohesion Through a Design System

I created a design system that would ensure consistency across all touchpoints, reinforcing brand identity and resulting in a seamless user experience that aligns with the brand’s core values.

final product

Previews of a Reinvented System

The final product is a desktop product that supports flows for various users with different needs. Below is an example of the collaborative and multi-faceted features of the interface.

License Requests - Licensor Flow

This flow allows licensors to view merch and artwork requests they have been sent from designers. Licensors can set pricing, suggest edits, and communicate with designers.

License Requests - Designer Flow

This version of the interface allows designers to view the suggested edits and any comments the licensor has left. They can choose to accept, create further edits, or decline these suggested changes.

The Impact

Led design efforts for a B2B startup as the sole designer, delivering UI prototypes, optimized information architecture, a robust design system, and scalable user workflows.

Revamped customer and admin interface, contributing to a 100%+ increase in new clients.

learnings
🌊 Small Fish, Big Waves

Working closely with the CEO/Product Owner in a small start-up environment allowed me to feel deeply connected to the product. As a result, the decisions I made carried significant weight and had a tangible impact. This experience pushed me to make executive decisions based on what I believed would best serve the product. It taught me to be self-reliant and trust in my ability to deliver a successful outcome.

💭 Building within Ambiguity

Building a product from scratch in an unfamiliar space taught me to adapt quickly and stay flexible. I often had to iterate and revise flows that no longer fit the MVP scope. Along the way, I learned about industry standards and asked insightful questions to create a product aligned with the company’s vision.
